Critical Incident Debriefing/Counselling

It is essential that formal debriefing or counselling occurs as quickly as possible after a critical incident. We have a large proportion of our staff that are qualified and experienced in dealing with clients suffering from the impact of a catastrophic accident. An example of this was our involvement with teachers and the principal of a school where a teacher’s aide was fatally stabbed. Individual counselling offered by our consultants to the staff meant reduced incidence of stress symptoms, which minimised the number of workers compensation claims than would normally have been expected, less time off work and reduced cost to the employer. In the event of a critical incident our Psychologists can be mobilised without delay. It is vital that all individuals who may have witnessed the incident or have been involved with the victim are given the option of counselling to reduce likelihood of a stress claim or ongoing psychological issues.

Performance and Vocational Counselling

For the “round peg in a square hole” or when the individual does not fit the culture of the organization for which they are employed. Rather than wait for a stress claim to develop, managers can refer individuals for vocational counselling to assist them to find other options in terms of either their career or employer. The alternative is performance counselling sessions to look at problem areas and areas that require improvement.

Lifestyle Counselling

Training seminars to teach managers and staff to develop balance in their lives so that they are able to gain perspective on work. Ensuring that they have appropriate social and community support and, if they do not, then teaching them to develop social capital. Promoting exercise, lifestyle, health, family and work balance creates more productive and harmonious working environment.

Recruitment and Selection Programs

Without doubt, accurately selecting the correct employee for a position will mean that there is less chance of occupational stress due to competency issues. Therefore, we have been engaged by employers to undertake psychological testing of both personality and intelligence. In addition, for some employers our psychologists also interview potential candidates to ensure that the person they are looking to hire matches the organisational profile and position requirements.

Mediation

Mediation and Conflict Resolution

These services can be essential to ensure issues that have caused workplace bullying/stress or may inhibit the chance of a successful return to work are adequately dealt with. If those issues are not dealt with appropriately the most likely result will be a failed return to work program that may greatly prejudice any future attempts. Mediation can be utilised to diffuse work place conflict and to ensure important issues that will affect a return to work program are dealt with e.g. workplace security. The majority of staff at CAC have completed a mediation course conducted by the International Conflict Resolution Centre at the University of Melbourne.

Workplace Bullying Investigation and resolution

This issue is becoming more prevalent in many workplaces and CAC have identified the need for a process that will identify the issues and provide recommendations on any corrective action that may be required. Typically, this involves our Psychologists meeting with and interviewing all parties that are involved at the workplace or one of our offices. Once a clear picture of the situation is established, a report detailing the findings of the investigation together with recommendations on corrective action is provided. The aim of this service is to resolve the issues, restore workplace harmony and to pre-empt or minimise the human and financial costs of workplace bullying/conflict.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Employees having access to EAP are less likely to experience occupational stress if these issues are dealt with effectively. Employers should not be concerned if issues are not related to the work place, as if these issues are not dealt with effectively they can cascade into a stress claim. Such programs should have a limit such as the 3-6 counselling sessions.
